Hello and welcome to all you fellow modern pioneers reclaiming the modern heritage of your homes in Racquet Club Road Estates and beyond!
I've been promising a blog now for some time and I finally made myself sit down and figure it out...well sort of.  So my hope is that this might serve as a neighborhood town hall. Since so many of us own a home but don't actually live in RCRE it would seem that our best hope for meeting, discussing, organizing and taking action would be in cyberspace (but of course, we're modern like the Jetsons!).
I've started with a couple of topics and will be adding more and will be glad to add topics per your requests. I'll do my best to keep it updated and get your comments and responses up as quickly as I can, assuming I can.
Cheers!

I think this is a great web site you have put together. Thank you!

I found this web site only by doing a search on google. I am sure if all the RCE home owners were aware of this site (maybe by a snail mail post card} they would be grateful.

I would like to see the telephone and power hanging wires relocated underground. I have sagging wires that hang directly over my pool which disturb me. If they fall, anyone in the pool would be electrocuted. They are also unsightly. Can we unite to have these thretening and unsightly wires relocated???

btw, LOVE the graphic at the top of the web page. Where did you find this? Is there a way to buy a print of it someplace - it would make a great framed piece of art for inside the house! RO

Her dad and George were brothers. Is there still a yearly event out there and if so, when. Thanks for your help, Susan Rubens

The MODERNISM Show is in Palm Springs every February. I will have to ook it up. If you are intersted in staying in the house go to www.vrbo.com/27214
It will give you all in house info. Will try to find the dates for PS MOD SHOW and email.

        Tricia,

I used to rent your house from the previous owners and love it. If you don't mind me asking, are you able to defer a lot of the costs by renting your house out?

Was wondering what would it entail to underground the utilities, at a recent tour it a ppeared that some homes had individually changed their above ground elect/tel/cable svc. to underground which I think would be a plus for the entire tract.
What's SCE's take on this. any thoughts & etc.?

I think we have a very good chance of having the utilities moved to undercground if we put our case together. I personally have great concern about the wires going over my poo. I am sure there are others. I also think the City of Palm Springs is well aware of the importance of modernism to the City. The Alexander homes are famous and should be invested in. I have had many problems with telephone and cable going out during the rains. How can we move this forward? We need a spokesperson who can gather the input and take it forward to: the city, the utility companies invoved (telephone, electric, cable, internet).

I am all for having the wires put underground. When they built these homes they thought that they were being so innovative by having them in the backs instead of the streets but most of us live in our backyards most of the year. I have also had issues with loosing power and cable in rain and wind. I think we should apply to the city for thise to be done but I wonder if it would make more sence to apply as a neighborhod organization first.

I think we first need to meet and figure out how we are going to do this.

I purchased an Aleander a year ago. The only problem is the water pressure. The city replaced the main but that did not help. Do I need to re-pipe? Are there any drawings in existance that shows the location of the water pipes to the house? Thanks.

They all need repiping eventually. That's the only thing that's going improve the pressure. The old galvanized pipes run straight from the street to the kitchen and through the cement slab to the bathrooms. You don't need to worry about a diagram cause you'll just abondon all that and run copper. To get to the bathrooms I think most people come in through the first bedroom and then through space over the closet, and then through the attic to the bathrooms. I think some people have tried just repiping from the street to the house but I've heard that can cause other problems.

We have just purchased a home in the area and unfortunately the folk that had the property before try to make it into a spanish style home. My gold is to bring it back to it original glory and enjoy the house until I am gone from the planet. LOL So here is the question where would I got find copies of the blue prints of the home?

This weekend, I'm going to be working with the TLC Channel who is shooting an episode of "My First Home." We are going to be focusing specifically on homes in the Racquet Club Road Estates neighborhood, featuring 5 or six properties. Should be fun, and great exposure for mid-century homes in Palm Springs. I'll reblog when I know the air-date...probably sometime in March.

Foreclosures have slowed down quite a bit in Racquet Club Road Estates- at the beginning of the year we were seeing REO properties selling around $200,000 to $250,000. In the past few months, this inventory has dried up. So hopefully that's an indication that property values in Racquet Club are at the bottom if not close to it. Currently the lowest price REO is on the Corner of Starr and Glen Cir, a flat roof design, at $259,900. It was in escrow for months and just came back on the market. Its in decent shape but could use some updating. If you know anyone looking for a fixer, this could be a great opportunity.

General question for all: I noticed quite a few RCE homes have translucent panel fences of some sort. I live in an MCM home in Atlanta and would like to recreate the look. Can anyone share what type of material is used in these fences -- plexiglass? Are the frames metal? Any additional construction details and info on maintenance issues would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much and congrats on your beautiful homes.

      Hi Neighbors,
I'm sure everyone has seen that for sale sign on a certain Alexander for a year and a half, and wondered what was going on. Well, wonder no more, we decided not to sell, and are moving in. Starting the end of this week, bringing stuff to the house, and fully in by the fall.

Hi Bobby- congrats on your new purchase. I've remodeled a few Alexander's over the years on a budget. Plus, I've sold quite a few in the neighborhood as well and have seen a wide variety of updates. Happy to help give you my 2 cents if you'd like.

      Hi,
We're new owners in the RCE of a 1963 Alexander Ranch home. There have been some remodels to the home over the years and wanted to know if there are any pics or plans available to see online of what the ranch homes looked like in their original state.

I just found your website and it is excellent! I am thinking of buying an Alexander in your area and was wondering if any can tell me the following:

      1) The site says that there is no insulation in the houses, but I have an old brochure (which is also on your site) which says that they do have insulation. Can you confirm which it is?
      2) If they are not insulated, I was wondering if you can give me an idea of your electric and gas bills in high and low season.

Thanks so much for your help!

The walls have insulation. However the roof does not. Since there is no attic space, you really can't add insulation. However many homeowners have add a spray home foam roof. This greatly improves the insulation qualities. There are other options you can do on the roof as well, including adding layes of insulation on the exterior- however sometimes that will affect the visual qualities of the architecture.

One more item- you can also upgrade the windows to dual pane low-e energy efficient types, that will also improve upon the insulative qualities of these homes. Many of the remodeled homes in the neighborhood will have these features.

I've always loved these kind of homes! As a child I grew up watching television shows in the 60's and 70's that showcased homes like this and always wanted to live in one. The car ports and sleek angles are so inviting. Beautiful homes!
